Tactical Removable Airborne Satellite Communications System Lets Connectivity Soar

The military needs fast, reliable, secure and cost-effective military satellite communications for C-130 aircraft.

Getting communications off the ground has been a challenge that has been undertaken for more than 15 years.

For aircraft that travel faster than other SATCOM-equipped vehicles, streaming high-definition video from the aircraft, and voice and data communications, can be tough. The Air Force users of C-130 airborne communications need reliable and secure connectivity that can support high data rates while moving at 1,000 miles per hour. This is a huge feat, and one that we at iDirectGov were ready and willing to take on.

To solve this challenge, we teamed up with partners to unveil the Tactical Removable Airborne Satellite Communications (TRASC) System. A commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution for the C-130 aircraft.

Besides the airborne assessment, the partners evaluated the practicalities of COTS equipment including how COTS equipment breaks the cycle of development and change order cost overruns. Additionally, a communication system based on COTS equipment has a much more deterministic budget.

Keeping the benefits in mind, R4 Integration, Inc. (R4), iDirectGov, UltiSat and SelectTech Geospatial teamed to combine the best-in-class COTS components into a sophisticated airborne terminal. The partners tested the COTS solution for the aircraft to bring cutting-edge technology to the warfighter much more quickly.
